mTCP Updates (2011-01-02): New FTP Server

Postby Brutman » Sun Jan 02, 2011 9:14 pm

Come and get it! Two great locations ...

The home page (http://www.brutman.com/mTCP) always has a download link. And now, for a limited time only you can use anonymous FTP and get it straight off of a PCjr!

For web browser users the address is: ftp://96.42.228.74:2021/MTCP/MTCP0102.ZIP

For command line users ftp to 96.42.228.74, and use port 2021. You can navigate to the directory and grab it there. The individual files are there too for your browsing pleasure.

This release has some minor performance fixes, some minor bug fixes, and the first version of the FTP server that I've been working on the last few weeks. The FTP server supports named user accounts, anonymous FTP, up to 10 clients at the same time, and it should be fairly compatible with a wide variety of FTP clients.

And here is a picture of the happy machine, complete with the might Zip 100 mass storage solution and hacked on ISA Ethernet card:

Enjoy!

Alright! I ftp'ed into your server from my PCjr and downloaded the zip file. Unfortunately, pkunzip on the Jr refused to correctly unpack the file, so I had to ftp into my pc, transfer it there and unpack it, then transfer it back to the Jr. I am in the process of printing the ftp server documentation and will give you an update on how it goes once I have it all set up. This is really great stuff!

Mike, we have a problem...
After transferring the new mTCP files to my PCjr and overwriting my old files (big mistake), I tried telnet and ftp and both corrupt the screen at startup and lock up the computer. No error message shows up neither do the usual startup credits. My system is functioning fine otherwise as far as I can tell with a V20 CPU ,640K Ram, an external parallel zip drive and a Xircom parallel network adapter. My TCP.CFG file is unchanged from prior.
Since the mTCP suite was working just fine prior to downloading the new files, could there be a bug with the new files?

I did locate an older version of mTCP telnet (version 12/12/09) on my PC backup drive and transferred it to the Jr, and it worked just fine. This then confirms that the problem is with the new version, at least on my setup...

We have nearly the same setup - V20 CPU and 640K. I've been running all of the apps continuously.

Did you download it correctly? I would grab the copy from the web site just to be sure. It sounds like the new code was corrupted during the transfer.

It looks the files were corrupted after all... I configured the ftp server and it works like a charm, at least within my home network. However, when I set it up for public internet access, then I'm not able to connect to it. Unfortunately, my networking knowledge is extremely basic, and I probably don't have my router set up properly. I tried to follow your instructions faithfully, but I don't quite understand all the router options available

Can you try ftp'ing into 71.63.190.157:2021 and see if you can get through?

I tried that address and port, but it didn't work.

One thing I forgot to mention in the documentation is that some home routers have a 'DMZ' concept - designating the PCjr as 'in the DMZ (de-militarized zone)' might be easier than trying to set up port forwarding. But it depends on the router. The DMZ is easier, but it's a rather crude solution, so I didn't put it in the docs - if your router has it try it.

I know the docs are big, but read them carefully - I put a few days of effort into them to try to explain the theory of what is going on so that people could translate for their specific setups.

You docs are very clear. I tried to follow them to the letter, but so far no luck. I went ahead and set the DMZ as you suggested. Try it again at 71.63.190.157:2021 and see if it makes a difference. Accessing the server using the local address works just fine (in my case 192.168.1.108:2021).
