Wasteland?

Post by Tempest »

Does anyone have a version of Wasteland that works on the PCjr? I know I had it working in the past, but all the versions I've tried now seem to just give me a flashing cursor in the upper left corner of the screen and that's it. I'm starting to wonder if it's because all the versions you can download are setup for EGA instead of Tandy but the setup program requires the original disks which I don't have (just the Interplay 10th anniversary CD and my original Apple II disks).

Wasteland is annoying because it sets up all the graphics modes from the floppy disks. The 10th Anniversary CD represents a fresh EGA install, which is worthless if you wish to use CGA RGB, CGA Composite or Tandy graphics. I believe that the Tandy graphics mode will work properly in the PCjr. with the Tandy mod. The Good Old Days has the disk images you will need if you find its Archive.

Unfortunately the disk images on that site aren't available for download.

No, you will not find the images on that site, but the Internet makes so much which was not intended for free public consumption available to the public these days, even in places where you might be surprised to find such things.

I've got a copy working that works with the Tandy Mod. If you're interested, I can upload. I wrote an image to a couple of floppies and installed it to my jrIDE CF.

Thanks but I got it working. Was Wasteland the only game that made separate files for the different versions of the graphics? Most games just had all the files in the same directory.

I believe Wasteland is converting graphics from 16-color to whatever the adapter requires during installation. It is hardly unique. Wing Commander 1 and 2 make separate installs for EGA, Tandy (WC1 only) and VGA. I believe Dark Queen of Krynn does something similar for EGA and VGA. Also SimCity will only copy over files which are required for your graphics adapter and the install cannot be easily changed without running the install program.
