CP/M-86

Post by strollin »

I have a copy of IBM CP/M-86 version 1.0, complete with binder and original disk on a shelf at home. I rescued it from the trash one day, brought it home, stuck it on the shelf and forgot all about it. I happened to notice it the other day and wondered if jr could boot it. I put the disk in the jr's disk drive and powered it up. I'll be darned if jr didn't boot right up to an A> prompt! Of course all I have is the OS disk, no other software of any kind so I don't know how useful it is. I guess I'll do some searching on the net for software compatible with CP/M-86 1.0. CP/M only recognizes 112K of jr's 640K of RAM.

Anybody ever used CP/M-86 or know of any resources about it?

Wow - that is quite a rarity. I have never seen CP/M-86 our junk bins .. we should trade junk bins!

Please make a good 'image' of the diskette before doing much more with it. It's an old disk and we don't want the bits to fall off.

There are some CP/M fans over at vintage-computer.com and on the classiccmp mailing list. They might be able to help with software to run.

I found a site with come CP/M software, most of it was for later versions of CP/M. I did find and DL a copy of Personal BASIC for CP/M-86 but then I realized that I have no way to get the software onto a CP/M formatted floppy.

On my site there is a CP/M part with a´CP/M 86 software repository´ mirror:

You´ll find here 22disk144 too:

22Disk Version 1.44, October, 1996
From Sydex, Inc. 22Disk is a DOS utility
that allows one to read, write and
format over 400 different CP/M diskette
formats.

Thanks for the pointer Janny. That CP/M archive looks promising.

Oddly, I also have a copy of CP/M-86 version 1.0. No manual, just the disk. I've had it forever and have no idea where it came from.

It's neat to see the PC boot something other than DOS.

Thanks for the link to the software repository
