Keyboard Squeak

Post by Tempest »

The spacebar on my pcjr keyboard (non-chiclet model) is squeaking rather badly and it's becoming an annoyance. What's the best way to fix this? Can I pry the spacebar up with a screwdriver and spray a lubricant on the plungers or are they attached differently on the pcjr keyboard? I don't want to try and force the keys if they can't be removed.

I'm interested in this too, as my Enter button squeaks, and also I'd like to disassemble the keyboard to give it a good clean..

If I remember right, there is no metal retaining bar giving the spacebar the extra spring to return to its natural position. Instead, there are some plastic bits that do the same thing. Silicone lubricant should help you out here.

But can you just pry the spacebar out with something like a screwdriver?

Why risk something by prying when you can just undo four screws on the back and get to everything you need?

No more squeak! Actually now the keyboard is almost too quiet. :)
