You have the right upgrades for your jr but really need to think about increasing memory. I know that would require using sidecars which you prefer not to do. ELKS (Embedded Linux Kernel Subset?) might work on a Jr, but it has to be patched to deal with the non-standard memory map. It's also quite dead as far as development goes.
