I use a Dom with mine, but that should work too.

I think CompactFlash is better because it could be easily re-connected to other (bigger) computer through flash-cards reader for formatting/copying...

I already had a Datafab Parallel port CF reader before I got my Jr-IDE. I use it to transfer things to and from my modern computer. It should be a decent backup device also.

Good news - it's working:

Bad news - it refuses to boot :(

I installed DOS 3.20 there (from diskette) - tried SYS C:, FORMAT C: /S and SELECT 001 US - files are there, but it's hanging in boot menu...

I installed dos 5.0 on mine to get bigger partitions. That requires a patch. Did you set the partition active using FDISK?

Once you get that going, you need to install a battery and the clock software. That is my second favorite feature of the card. I had plenty of memory. :D

Using a DOM, FDISK and format were the only utilities I needed. I don't know if it is different when using a CF adapter. I have considered trying to do CF And DOM even though Mike cautions against it. I have a spare DOM so I could use it without risking any data. That would give me a great way to back up the DOM.

Assuming it is supported in DOS 3.2, try "fdisk /mbr" and reboot. Lots and lots of boot issues on the XT-IDE project have been resolved with that simple step.
