My first machine that remotely resembled a computer was the Timex Sinclair 1000. With the 16K RAM pack, thermal printer, shoebox style cassette recorder and a 19" black and white TV it was a sight to behold. Oh, how little I knew back then. My father had a mainframe background so he obviously saw it as a curiosity compared to a real computer, but he was kind enough to not let that leak out.
The Timex was a nasty little critter. The connection to the 16K RAM pack was poor, so if you didn't wedge something underneath it you lost your work spontaneously. Saving and loading from cassette tapes was awful. The membrane keyboard with a gazillion multiple shift states was a nightmare too. (Only 40 'keys' for everything.) But yet, it was a Z80 under the hood. Poor thing ...
The PCjr was next. That's when things really got serious.
