DOS networking programs?

Postby jason » Wed Sep 17, 2008 4:58 pm

Okay, I got my Xircom adapter working on my jr (I think), and I tried the telnet client, but didn't have anything to connect to at the moment. Anyway, are there any recommended programs to have under DOS for networking? i.e. ftp...I'm assuming there's nothing samba like so I can remote mount my other computers hard drive?

Any pointers would be appreciated. That and if anyone can tell me how to setup an ftp server on my Windows XP machine, lol. I have no idea how to set that up either.

Thanks!

You are only a day or two off .. you could have connected to a PCjr with your telnet client yesterday. :-)

Have you checked my web pages at http://www.brutman.com/Dos_Networking? I've got an IRC client out there that runs well on the Jr. NCSA is the best Telnet client, and it has a good FTP server built into it too.

Yeah, I was hoping to connect to yours Mike, but I when I went to get the IP from your thread on the vintage computer forums, I saw you had taken it down ;) .

Is the NCSA telnet client the one here: http://www.micro-zone.com/files.htm tel2.exe ?

Oh yeah, and I did read your networking page as well, that and the one at PCjr reborn.

Well, after 3.5 days I decided to end the test before something caught fire. It's a good machine, but it wasn't built as a server.

Go to my Dos_Networking page and look for the software section. There is a link to NCSA telnet downloads there. The one you found at micro-zone.com is a smaller telnet client from the authors of the Trumpet TCP/IP stack, and I consider it to be horrible and unusable compared to NCSA telnet.

Setup is not trivial, but it's worth it.
