Postby Chuckphd53 » Sat Oct 06, 2018 2:31 pm

I just tried Dosshell 5.00 and the display flickers.
This is the first time I've run it and the screec flickerson/off..
I do have the TandyMod on this machine, not sure that matters..

Anyone else seen this...

I've never seen this before, so a video might help.

I had the same issue and fixed using the following excerpt from an old article I found online about running DOS 5 on the PCjr. I edited the DOSSHELL.INI file as described in the second paragraph..

"When you start DOSSHELL.EXE, the screen will come up with
several blinking areas which is very annoying. Happily, this is
a minor problem compared to the ones we have dealt with so far.
The easiest solution is to simply select the Eight Colors or
Mono 2 options from the Colors selection of the Options menu as
described in the manual.

The source of the problem is the DOSSHELL.INI file for the
CGA display. Background colors used for some areas of the
screen, which are normal with the standard CGA card, blink on the
PCjr. You can correct the problem by editing the INI file with
the new DOS Editor. Look for the "title = Ocean" line which
identifies the default color selection. Scroll down to the
"background =" section and replace the offending "brightwhite"
color with "white" and "brightcyan" with "cyan." For a final
touch replace the "white" color for "elevator" and "titlebar"
with "cyan" or another color so they will stand out from the
background."

Oh, so this was just text-mode blinking because DOSSHELL doesn't know how to turn off the blink bit (ie. enable all 16 background colors) on CGA cards.

jim was this a solution, comment, thought ?
Seems the screen is in 4 color mode for OCEAN selection Magenta,Cyan, ( palette)
I am going to play a bit more this week but for now,
It would be nice if this was text mode with 16 colors.... could be...

I did play with the text colors and found a nice set, I will upload the .INI tomorrow when I get to work...

Comment. I'm sure DOSSHELL works fine on your system if you had a VGA card. Another alternative would be to write a memory-resident program that wakes up once a second and turns off the blink bit on CGA systems, which would fix the problem after startup, but I don't have the free time to do that for you, sorry.

I think you misunderstood, not asking for a solution just wanted to understand your comment,'I could write a TSR but for this I was just revisiting and understanding Dosshell 5.0 nothing more.
I actually think PCTools 6.0 works fairly well for file management.
I especially like the simple file transfer.

The biggest goal after getting back on the JR. as I expect for many of us is file management, for me it was to get all the old programs I wrote years back and get them in order and backed up in some fashion.
Trying to figure out with ones were written with Turbo Pacal 3/4/5/6 ugh.

I found the Zip100 a good path for this, as it is cheap and multiple backups are easy.
I also use the JR-ide with the 512M DOM as backup, easy to plug in and copy to...

Off topic, I loaded the game Perfect General, then found out it needed an EGA display, too bad it would have been a nice strategy game for the JR. but , back on topic, it was Easy to push to the Zip100 so I can move it to one of my two Win98 Presario Machines. I worked at Compaq for 7 yrs , early years. Liked the Presario line, designed alot of the functional test equipment for the production lines....

Dosshell has some nice features too, but for now I think the simple XCopy command is a nice backup solution.
