XT-IDE on PCjr

I'm in the "do not want to soldier" camp -- my skills have not progressed with practice and I've wrecked several simple projects. I was beyond grateful when Alan agreed to solder up my jrIDE board for me.

Whatever the next iteration is, I'm in for two (or $300, whichever is less) as I want to support the project.

My apprehension is not soldering the roughly 228 through holes of the current jrIDE design, but those two PLCC sockets.

I'd still like an assembled one, if/when available, for what it's worth... I'm also in the camp of poor solderers.

I'm glad that there is so much interest in pre-assembled and pre-tested boards, but I'd really like to ensure that the option to build exists for those of us who want to rough it.

It is also probably absurd to charge only $25 extra over the cost of the kit for assembly and testing. That was great for the first round, but I don't think it is sustainable.

I'd be willing to assemble kits for people who want them, provided I'm not expected to take the connector out of an existing sidecar, but only for a through-hole design. I've done some surface-mount parts before, but I don't like it, haha.

The sidecar connectors have landed!

I have 25 pairs of genuine Amphenol parts. The final cost with inbound shipping is $12.85 per pair. I know some of you expressed an interest in buying some. I'd like to make sure we have enough to make a short run of the jrIDE boards. What is the next step? Is it cost effective to make 10 boards and sell the rest of the connectors to those who need them?

I'm still in for a fully assembled version, knowing full well it won't be the same price as the first round.

The boards I got through OSHPark's medium run service. They are $20.25 each order-able in multiples of 10. I don't mind fronting the cost of 20 more plus parts, pre-programming the PLDs, and kitting them up. However I don't have time to solder. It would actually work out better for me if I could just kit the parts in a weekend complete with USPS flat rate boxes, pre-pay shipping on all, and then just address and drop them into the mail-box the same day per demand.

How do we want to do this? Have people buy the connectors separate and the kits here or split it up different? I can cover reimbursing you connector cost for 20 if that eases things.

Oh and anything we want to change? CF adapter would make the boards more expensive and harder to solder, but may be worth it. One change I might make is to add two pre-biased transistors to the 7-seg common cathodes. That way the small PLD doesn't have to dissipate so much power.
