JrIDE and IDE to SD card adapter

Postby Corey986 » Wed Jun 18, 2014 2:53 am

Has anyone tried one of these $10 converters off eBay. This would be the perfect solution for me I think because I could move an SD card easily back and forth to my "modern" Machine to copy files.

I should be building my jrIDE this weekend or next so I need to figure out what I'm ordering to use as a drive.

Thanks,
Corey

I've not had good luck with them on the IDEjr, but have had good luck with them on the XT-IDE cards. All of my 8088 machines with XT-IDE cards are using CF adapters.
I don't think it's the adapter itself, I think the SD card (at least the 3 cards I've tried) are not compatible with the IDEjr.
I've also found that certain DOMs and spinning drives that work with the XT-IDE do not work with the IDEjr.

It's too bad too- I wanted the same functionality, as having removable media makes it significantly easier to update/transfer files between a modern PC and the jr.

Don't get me wrong- I loves me the IDEjrs (I have 2 of them) and am forever grateful that they exist. There may indeed be a secret combination of CF+adapter+IDEjr that does work- I have not found it yet.

Do you have any idea of what is wrong? Is it something fundamental, like they won't even return an ID to the PCjr, or something more complex like data corruption during transfers?

It was awhile ago that I was messing with it, so apologies but I seem to recall a mixed bag of results:
either an invalid ID string is returned (all high ascii characters)
or no drive is detected at all.

I think no drive at all was the most common. I have 3 CF cards and at least 2 different brands of IDE->CF adapters to play with.

it can definitely be researched a bit more- what's the base address of the IDE ports on the IDEjr?
I have some cheapo diagnostic software that I wrote for XTIDE which gets and displays port values and attempts to get and display the identify device data packet. I just need to port them to jr-land.

They are in the ROM window:

Code: Select all
offset 0x0000 -> 0x39FF = BIOS ROM extensions (14.5K)
offset 0x3A00 -> 0x3BFF = IDE sector data window.  Can be copied via rep movsw for count = 256 (512 bytes)
offset 0x3C00 -> 0x3C07 = IDE CS1 registers - 8-bit mappings (8 bytes)
offset 0x3C08 -> 0x3C0F = IDE CS2 registers - 8-bit mappings (8 bytes)
offset 0x3C10           = UMB RAM fill control
                            bit 7 : RAM fill enable 0xC0000 -> 0xC3FFF / 16KB
                            bit 6 : RAM fill enable 0xC4000 -> 0xC7FFF / 16KB
                            bit 5 : RAM fill enable 0xC8000 -> 0xCBFFF / 16KB
                            bit 4 : RAM fill enable 0xCC000 -> 0xCFFFF / 16KB
                            bit 3 : RAM fill enable 0xD0000 -> 0xD7FFF / 32KB (must replace Z5x ROM)
                            bit 2 : RAM fill enable 0xD8000 -> 0xDFFFF / 32KB (must replace Z5x ROM)
                            bit 1 : RAM fill enable 0xE0000 -> 0xE7FFF / 32KB (must replace Z5x ROM)
                            bit 0 : RAM fill enable 0xE8000 -> 0xEFFFF / 32KB (must replace Z5x ROM)
offset 0x3C11           = Flash window enable and remap control
                            bit 7 : Flash remap target page bit 0 (A14)
                            bit 6 : Flash remap target page bit 1 (A15)
                            bit 5 : Flash remap target page bit 2 (A16)
                            bit 4 : Flash remap target page bit 3 (A17)
                            bit 3 : Flash remap target page bit 4 (A18)

So which models of DOM on eBay or Amazon would work? Can you post some links?

Thanks,
Corey

these guys work:
http://www.amazon.com/Transcend-4GB-Fla ... B00138NFDW

I tried to buy one off ebay but the company I bought it from was out of stock. they upgraded me to an 8G for free, which was very cool of them.

When I got it, I fdisk+formatted it on the jr and then I planned on attaching it to a PATA->USB converter I have so I could copy games to it off my modern machine.

The DOM comes with a little external power adapter so you can use it on a normal IDE cable that doesn't supply power on pin 22 (or whatever pin it is).
The instant I plugged power into the DOM, it smoked! I didn't even have a cable attached to it yet, so it wasn't like I was driving power to it from the cable and the external power connector.

Luckily, it was only the activity LED that smoked, not the actual DOM or anything flash, but I was too scared to try to plug it into my USB converter at that point, so I ended up copying all my files onto it using the IDEjr only with a spinning PATA disk as a slave device. It took many, many hours to copy all my games onto just 1 partition!

8 gig of storage on anything 8088 is ridiculously stupid- there isn't enough software written that supports 8088 to fill a drive that big, unless trixter starts releasing full length movies in 8088 domination mode.

So not to be overkill... '

would this 1gb Transcend 40 pin DOM work?

That is the exact model I have (in fact when I clicked the link Amazon said "you purchased this item on..."). It works fine.
