Paul

I have never heard of a Backpack drive, so I found a pcture on a Google search.

It looks like a standard 3.5drive in a case.

So... most 3.5 drives pull alot less current than their 5.25 conterparts.
For the 12v line if you can provide a minimum current source of 300ma (.300 amps) and
for the 5v line you can provide a minimum current source of 200ma (.200 amp)
this should be fine for the drive to work.

If the Backpack case has a single source input like 12v from a wallwart adapter
then I would consider using one rated at least around 600ma (.600 amps)

not sure if I am on the same page but still glad to help If i can get more info in the drive..

Thanks Chuck, I'll look into that. I've been looking in Ebay for it under 'microsolutions' and saw a few that might work.
Thanks again!

My 3.5" parallel port attached Backpack drive has a power supply that supplies 5 volts at 1600 mA through a small barrel connector. The barrel is center positive.

The 1600 mA part seems like overkill.

i agree with Mike, the 3.5 drive is low, power so if it indeed uses a 5volt pack then 500ma - 1000ma supply should be fine..

also i would guess strongly that it is 5V DC not AC
