Mike's PCjr Page

I've already mentioned that I've blown two PCjr PSU cards. I've decided that instead of letting these go to waste and being a complete part swapper, I'll try to replace whatever it was that may have been blown on the PSU and bring them back to life.

What happened was that I had a derp moment and powered on the PCjr with the IR module plugged in BACKWARDS. (I seriously don't know how I managed to do such a stupid thing)
Anyway, I'm not sure how the second card was blown, I know I didn't do the same stupid thing. Maybe there was a short on the mobo or something...

I've powered the card and checked the edge connector with a multimeter and there were no readings. I'm not sure where else to go with this or what to check and how to check it. A little bit of help would be nice.

There should be a few fuses soldered on to the board here and there. Not exactly sure how to describe their appearance. You might have just blown one of those. I know I did on my card, once, and I just soldered a wire in place of the fuse to get the card working again.

Are the fuses on this card the things that look like a green resistor without any bands or is it something else?

The symbol underneath marks them as a resistor. I'm confused. A green resistor witho0ut any bands? :S

Anyway, whatever these things are, I checked them for continuity and there was no readings. No readings from any of them.


@jmetal88 Is this the fuse you were referring to, or am I supposed to be looking for something else.

Ah, crap, you've got the short card. I think on that one the fuses are the ceramic globe-looking things, but I'm not sure. On my board, (I just pulled it out to check) it does look like a green resistor, but it has bands. It's marked "F1 5A" on my board.

I'm thinking about taking a hacksaw to the edge connector and connecting a PSU to it for now. IDK.

Anyway, as I mentioned in that other thread, I've connected a 450 watt PSU to the mobo, just to see it boot.

Indeed, as jmetal88 already pointed out, the fuse seems to be a little green "resistor" (look at the pic below). I've checked both power cards and found that the broken one has the fuse blowed up. I can try replacing it; but it most probably will blow again...



@Eric, so you connected the +/-12V and +5V right to the power slot, right?. I'm thinking to forget about the MicroATX PSU and use a picoPSU like this

Interesting. I am getting reading from that fuse.

I also tried to jump it and still no power. This is giving me a headache. :S
